An overview of all the core skills you will learn from your driving instructor, that will will eventually make up your driving test.

  1. Show Me, Tell Me

    Show me, tell me questions are types of questions your examiner may ask you during your practical test. These questions fall under various themes where you will be asked "show" to examiner something by practically carrying out the answer or to "tell" the examiner the answer.

  2. Preparation

    First thing's first, to ensure you're ready to set out on a journey in a car, you need to perform some key preparation checks in and around your vehicle and you will be required to demonstrate these when you come to sit your driving test.

  3. Traffic

    When you're out on the road you will always be dealing with traffic in some form or other. During your practical test you will be assessed not only on practical aspects such as use of signals, use of speed and your behaviour when meeting traffic, crossing traffic or overtaking, but also on your anticipation of these situations.

  4. Junctions

    Different junctions have their own unique features which means your observation and behaviour need to be alert to the different hazards that could present themselves. Typically, these fall under 3 main skills; turning left, turning right and emerging.

  5. Traffic Management

    Some road layouts are in place to help traffic flow smoothly, like roundabouts, pedestrian crossings and dual carriageways. During your practical test you will need to demonstrate you can anticipate and interact with these, as well as being able to show you're capable of safely turning the vehicle around (also referred to as turning in-road).

  6. Manoeuvres

    There are a number of key manoeuvres that you can be testing on during your practice driving test. Some manoeuvres are less likely to be part of a test, or may not be included at all, but it's common for instructors to teach you these as many have particular car movements that are useful to know.

    You will cover all over these situations are part of your tuition with your driving instructor. The aim is to have you experience the many different road conditions and road situations, so you're a more well-rounded driver and confident whenever you go out in the car on your own.
