Your First Driving Lesson

What to expect from you're first driving lesson

The first driving lesson usually makes learners nervous because they have no idea of what to expect. It's often the case that the first driving lesson goes very well and the learner is very happy at the end. There is no reason your first lesson won't be the same.

What do you need before the lesson?

Sleep! Get a good sleep and arrive fresh and focused.

Breakfast! It really is the most important meal of the day.

Ensure you know when and where you will be picked up.

Wear comfortable non-slip shoes.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses - make you sure you bring them.

The Pick-Up

Normally when you are taken out for your first lesson, you won't be driving straight away. Your instructor usually picks you up, does some explaining on how the lessons work, and talk about his plan for teaching. The instructor will normally then take you to a quiet, safe location to hand over control so you learn the basics.

Don't be surprised if by the end of the first lesson if you are driving on dual carriage ways though, these instructors know what they are doing.

The Cockpit Drill

You will learn to carry this out every time you enter the car and sit in the driver's seat. This is something you will be tested on in future.

  • Doors - are securely shut.
  • Seat - is it comfortable?
  • Steering wheel is in the right position.
  • Seat belts on.
  • Mirrors - they are adjusted for you.

Moving the car

It's time to drive. Before you start of though there are a few things your instructor will explain.

  • Gears - and how to change them.
  • Clutch Control and finding the biting point.
  • Mirror, Signal and finding the blind spot.
  • How to stop the car - this is important.
  • Parking.

Once you start driving, you will love it. Remember to try and relax and enjoy the first lesson - there is nothing quite like it at first.
