DVSA: Rules for your pupils using their own car for their driving test
Posted 05 November 2026 — Anyone
Your pupils can take their driving test in their own car if it meets certain rules.
If it doesn’t, their test will be cancelled and they will need to pay for another slot.
The rules they need to follow
Their car must:
-be taxed
-be insured for a driving test
-be roadworthy
-have a current MOT
-have no warning lights showing
-have no tyre damage and meet the legal tread depth
-have an extra interior rear-view mirror for the examiner
-be able to reach at least 62mph and have an mph speedometer
-be fitted with L-plates on the front and rear
Most people arrive in a car that meets the rules, but this isn’t always the case. We have seen an increase in people attending their tests in vehicles that aren’t roadworthy.
Please remind your pupils to check their car meets all these requirements before test day.
